Winnie Gebhardt-Gayler

Winnie Gebhardt-Gayler (March 12, 1929 - August 27, 2014 ) was a German illustrator of children's and school books . She was best known for her drawings for Otfried Preußler 's children's books The Little Aquarius and The Little Witch .

Life and work

There are different details about Winnie Gebhardt-Gayler's place of birth. She was born either in Crailsheim or in Stuttgart . In the post-war period, she made up her Abitur because she could not finish her education because of the war. Then she was accepted at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart . There she studied graphics , painting and lithography for five years .

After completing her studies, she met Lotte Weitbrecht , the discoverer of Michael Ende . Weitbrecht presented her with the unpublished manuscript of Little Aquarius and Gebhardt-Gayler provided sample drawings and a draft for the title page. Thienemann Verlag then decided to publish the book with its illustrations in 1956. In 1957, the work was awarded the special prize for text and illustration of the German Youth Literature Prize. Other books by Preussler with her drawings were Die kleine Hexe (1957) and Thomas Vogelschreck (1958). In the following years Gebhardt-Gayler also illustrated many children's books by other well-known authors, including two editions by Wilhelm Matthießen ( Die Katzenburg , 1958 and Am stillen Brunnen , 1967) as well as works by Frithjof Fischer , Nino Erné , Miss Read , Käthe Recheis , Gianni Rodari and Josef Guggenmos .

In addition to the illustrations for children's books, which were mainly published by Thienemann Verlag, she also drew the pictures for some school books and designed the posters for an English food company. In later years she worked regularly for a children's magazine and also designed games.

Winnie Gebhardt-Gayler died on August 27, 2014 at the age of 85.
