Winthrop W. Aldrich
Winthrop Williams Aldrich (* 2. November 1885 in Providence , Rhode Iceland ; † 25. February 1974 in New York City ) was an American bank manager , banker and diplomat , among others from 1934 to 1953 CEO of Chase National Bank , as well as Was the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1953 to 1957 .
Life
Family, studies and lawyer
Winthrop Williams Aldrich was a son of the politician Nelson W. Aldrich , who represented Rhode Island for the Republican Party as a member of the US House of Representatives and the US Senate , and his wife Abby Pierce Chapman. His older brother Richard S. Aldrich was also a member of the US House of Representatives. His eldest sister Lucy Aldrich was a philanthropist and art collector. His older sister Abby Aldrich Rockefeller was the wife of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and, among other things, the mother of the future US Vice President Nelson Rockefeller and the future Governor of Arkansas Winthrop Rockefeller . After attending school, he himself completed an undergraduate degree at Harvard University , which he completed in 1907 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). A subsequent postgraduate study of law at Harvard University, which he graduated in 1910 with a Juris Doctor (JD).
After his legal approval to the Bar of the City of New York , he joined in 1910. lawyer and also had an approval in the Supreme Court of the United States . After the United States entered the First World War on April 6, 1917, he began his military service and served in the US Navy until 1918 . After the war he resumed his legal practice and was President of the New York Bar Association (Bar of the City of New York) between 1929 and 1930 .
Bank manager, banker and ambassador to the United Kingdom
In addition to his work as a lawyer, Aldrich began working as a bank manager and banker in the late 1920s . He was President of the Equitable Trust Company from 1929 to 1930, and then President of Chase National Bank from 1930 to 1934 , before being Chairman of the Board of Chase National Bank from 1934 to 1953. He is also involved in the American Bankers Association (ABA), in the Pilgrims Society and as a trustee of the United Hospital Fund . On his initiative in 1946 the state of New York enabled the construction of a World Trade Center (WTC) by law.
On February 2, 1953, Winthrop Williams Aldrich was appointed as the successor to Walter Sherman Gifford as the United States' Ambassador to the United Kingdom and delivered his credentials there on February 20, 1953 . He remained in this post until February 1, 1957 and was then replaced by John Hay Whitney . He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations .
Aldrich was married on 7 December 1916 to her death in 1972 with Harriet Alexander Crocker, a granddaughter of the railway - tycoon Charles Crocker . From this marriage the daughters Mary Aldrich, Harriet Crocker, Lucy Truman and Elizabeth "Liberty" Brewster and the sons Winthrop Williams Aldrich and Alexander Aldrich emerged. After his death he was buried in the Swan Point Cemetery in Providence.
