When the Duchy of Warsaw was founded in 1807 , Witkowo became part of it, but came back to Prussia in 1815 after the dissolution of the Duchy. In 1817 a severe fire raged in the city and construction took until 1847. In 1887 the Prussian district Witkowo was founded. In 1896 the Witkowo district railway was put into operation. On November 12, 1918, at the end of the First World War , the city administration was taken over by Polish workers 'and soldiers' councils . In 1926 the powiat Witkowo was dissolved. In September 1939, the city was captured by the German Wehrmacht during the attack on Poland .
