Vyacheslav Alexandrovich Malafejew ( Russian Вячесла́в Алекса́ндрович Малафе́ев ; born March 4, 1979 in Leningrad , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian football goalkeeper .
Career at Zenit St. Petersburg
Born and raised in Leningrad, now Saint Petersburg , Vyacheslav Malafeyev attended a junior football school at the age of six. In 1997 he graduated from football school with honors and was then appointed to the second team of Zenit St. Petersburg . Two years later he joined the professional team.
He made his club debut in a game against Alania Wladikawkas after his then goalkeeper colleague Roman Berezovsky was sent off for insulting the referee.
In 2001, Malafeyev received his first medal after his club took third place in the Supreme Division .
In 2003 Vyacheslav Malafeyev, who has since become the goalkeeper of Zenit St. Petersburg, took second place and was also named “Goalkeeper of the Year”.
In 2005, Malafejew was downgraded to second goalkeeper after being sent off in a cup game against CSKA Moscow , but was able to regain his regular place a year later.
In 2007 he won the Premjer League championship with Zenit St. Petersburg and was once again named “Goalkeeper of the Year”.
In the 2007/2008 season he and his club celebrated the greatest success of his career so far: winning the UEFA Cup and the championship in the Premjer League .
Career in the Russian national team
In 1999 Malafejew was appointed to the Russian youth Olympic selection. In 2003 he made his debut for the Russian national team .
At the 2004 European Championships in Portugal, he came to two missions, because the then goalkeeper, Sergei Ovtschinnikow , was suspended due to a red card.
At the European Championships in 2008 he reached the semifinals with the Russian national team. Since he was only second goalkeeper behind Igor Akinfejew , he was not used.
At the Euro 2012 Malafejew was the first goalkeeper because Akinfejew was injured. However, Russia unexpectedly eliminated in the preliminary round.
On August 27, 2012, Malafejew ended his career in the national team.
Private
Malafejew has an older brother named Sergei (* 1975) who also played football and is now a referee.
Malafeyev has been married for the second time since December 11, 2012. His first wife, with whom he was married from 2001, died on March 17, 2011 in a car accident in Saint Petersburg. His first marriage resulted in a daughter (* 2003) and a son (* 2006). He has a son with his second wife (* 2013).
