Life

After graduating from high school in 1936, Vladimir Gall began studying world literature and German at the Moscow University of History, Philosophy and Literature. Lev Kopelev was one of his teachers . After successfully completing his studies, he volunteered for the Red Army , as Moscow had already called for battle in the Great Patriotic War after Germany's attack on the Soviet Union .

Because of his good knowledge of German, Wladimir Gall was assigned to a special unit. His task was to use loudspeaker trucks to inform the German soldiers about the causes of the war, fascism in Germany and the role of the Red Army directly at the main battle line . His squad was shot at several times. During this time he got to know Konrad Wolf , who had a job similar to his and who later made a monument to Gall with his film I was 19 .

In April 1945, Wladimir Gall and his unit reached Berlin. After reaching Berlin-Spandau he was installed as a parliamentarian together with Major Grischin. Officers of the Wehrmacht and the SS had holed up in the citadel there . Since several hundred civilians would have died in the citadel in an attack, it was decided to negotiate with the commandant regarding a surrender . This took place on May 1, 1945, a few days before the end of the Second World War .

After the end of the war, Wladimir Gall became head of the cultural department of SMAD in Halle (Saale) . After his return to the Soviet Union, he first worked as a teacher at the Antifa Central School in Krasnogorsk , later as a university lecturer for foreign languages in Moscow.
