Vladimir Voronin (2006)

Vladimir Voronin (born May 25, 1941 in Corjova , today Transnistria , Russian Владимир Николаевич Воронин / Wladimir Nikolajewitsch Voronin) is a Moldovan politician . He was President of the Republic of Moldova from 2001 to 2009 .

biography

Voronin comes from an ethnically Romanian ( Moldovan ) family. He got his Russian family name from his stepfather, who was Russian .

After training as a food engineer (from 1971), he studied at the Academy for Social Sciences from 1983, then at the Academy of the Foreign Ministry of the Soviet Union . He also made it to major general in the army. From 1980 to 1990 he was a member of the Moldovan Soviet Republic .

On August 27, 1991, the Republic of Moldova officially declared its independence from the Soviet Union and constituted itself as an independent state. Voronin became chairman of the Communist Party of Moldova (PCRM).

On April 4, 2001, Voronin was elected as the third President of the Republic of Moldova to succeed Petru Lucinschi with 71 out of 101 votes . In his election campaign he called for closer cooperation with Russia and the recognition of Russian as the second official language . For this reason Voronin ordered the reduction of the Moldovan army by 2000 to 6500 soldiers. He even considered dissolving the Moldovan armed forces. He opposed the advancing privatization and the increasing corruption in the country. He also promised an early end to the Transnistria conflict and in this context vaguely held out the prospect of Moldova's annexation to the Russian-Belarusian Union .

The parliamentary elections on March 6, 2005 again brought the PCRM a majority of the seats. However, since the Moldovan constitution requires the president to win at least 61 of the 101 votes, Voronin had to rely on votes from the opposition for re-election. Promises and offers to the opposition softened their originally unanimous boycott announcement. On April 4, 2005, Voronin was confirmed for a second term with 75 votes. At a special session, however, only 89 out of 100 MPs took part in the vote, 11 MPs from the Christian Democratic People's Party (PPCD) did not want to vote for any of the three candidates.

After the elections on April 5, 2009 , Voronin was elected as the new President of Parliament with the votes of the Communist MPs. It had previously been speculated that the president, who according to the constitution could not run again, might move to this office. The election of a new head of state failed, however, because Zinaida Greceanîi, planned by the communists as Voronin's successor, failed to achieve the necessary three-fifths majority in parliament. According to the Moldovan Constitution, Voronin was forced to dissolve parliament and call new elections in July . After these elections, Mihai Ghimpu , the chairman of the Partidul Liberal, was elected Voronin's successor as parliamentary president in a controversial parliamentary session.

As previously announced, Voronin resigned from the post of President on September 11, 2009. His communist party had previously not been able to defend an absolute majority of the seats in parliament in the early parliamentary elections. The office of head of state went to the newly elected President of Parliament, Mihai Ghimpu , who will hold office until a new president is elected. However, he is still often present in public.
