Wołomin is a Polish city ​​in the Masovian Voivodeship and is located about 20 kilometers northeast of the capital Warsaw .

history

Wołomin was first mentioned in the 15th century . It remained a small town of little importance for a long time until the railway line from Warsaw to Białystok was built in 1862 . From then on, Wołomin also gained increasing importance for summer tourism from Warsaw.

Wołomin obtained town charter in 1919. Until before the Second World War , the city had a significant Jewish and Russian population, which, however, was relocated to the Warsaw ghetto due to the German occupation and from there were deported to extermination camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau . The city was the scene of numerous battles between the Soviet Union and the German Empire during World War II .

From 1975 to 1998 the municipality was part of the Warsaw Voivodeship .
