It rises in a moorland landscape on the north Russian ridge just beyond the oblast border in the Vologda Oblast. It flows a short distance to the north, then turns to the east and then flows within the Kostroma Oblast in a predominantly southern direction. The settlement of the same name Wochma is a few kilometers west of the river. After 219 km the river reaches the Volga tributary Wetluga and drains an area of 5560 km². It is essentially fed by the snowmelt. Important tributaries are the Karjug and Irdom from the left and the Penoma and Wotsch from the right.
