Traut's date of birth is not known exactly and is given in various sources between 1478 and 1490. The family relationships are also unclear. He is sometimes referred to as a son, then again as a brother or nephew (brother's son) of Johann (Hans) Traut. Hans Traut is given as the name of two artists, Hans Trau the Younger was a painter, Hans Traut the Elder a painter and goldsmith who came from Speyer . It is possible that Traut did an apprenticeship with Michael Wolgemut . For the first time, especially in appearance he entered 1505. This year the book was published , the decision of the Gart Rosenkrantz Mary of Ulrich Pinder , the 13 woodcuts was illustrated by Traut. Other woodcuts for this book were made by Hans Baldung , Hans Schäufelein and Hans von Kulmbach . At that time he was an employee in Albrecht Dürer's workshop . The Artelshofen Altar was built in 1514 and is now in the Bavarian National Museum and attributed to him.

Other works by Traut were the altar sheet created in 1502 in the parish church of St. Lawrence and an altar sheet in the clothmaker's chapel for St. Anne.
