Wolfgang Blenk

Wolfgang Blenk (born July 28, 1926 in Dornbirn ; † July 20, 1996 there ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) from the state of Vorarlberg . From 1970 to 1990 he was a member of the Austrian National Council and from 1976 to 1991 a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Wolfgang Blenk was born on July 28, 1926 as the son of the builder Josef Blenk and his wife Ida (née Allgäuer) in the town of Dornbirn in the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley . After attending elementary school and the Bundesrealschule Dornbirn , where he graduated from high school in 1944 , Wolfgang Blenk first studied Romance languages and economics and finally law at the University of Innsbruck from the mid-1940s . Wolfgang Blenk applied for membership in the NSDAP on April 3, 1943 , which took place on April 9, 1944. He was assigned the membership number 9,850,951. In 1959 he was elected deputy city party chairman of the ÖVP Dornbirn and was a member of the city ​​council of his hometown from April 23, 1965 to 1970 .

Wolfgang Blenk was sworn in for the first time as a member of the National Council on March 31, 1970. He was subsequently economic and science spokesman for the ÖVP parliamentary group in the National Council for more than 20 years as a member of the National Council in a total of six legislative periods. In 1976 he became a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe , where he was chairman of the Christian Democrats group from 1981 . In 1983/84 he also presided as Vice-President of the Council of Europe. It was not until November 4, 1990 that Blenk left parliament and retired.

Private life

Wolfgang Blenk was married to Barbara (née Gaudl) and had three children with her. His daughter Andrea , born in 1969, was regional councilor in the Vorarlberg state government from 2009 to 2013 and has been mayor of Dornbirn since 2013.
