from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolfgang Fennel (born February 7, 1947 in Warnemünde ) is a German physicist and university professor in the field of theoretical oceanography .

Life

Wolfgang Fennel was born in 1947 as the son of an engineer in Warnemünde. Fennel was a founding member of the beat band Baltics in 1964 and their guitarist until 1966 . This achieved some popularity in the north of the GDR . Together with Wolfgang Ziegler , Fennel was involved, among other things, in the soundtrack for the DEFA film Die Reise nach Sundevit by Heiner Carow . In 1966 he also passed his Abitur and began studying physics at the University of Rostock , which he graduated with a diploma in 1970. He was then to 1976 assistant at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Rostock and put while his thesis on the "theory of the electron gas at finite temperatures" in front of which he in 1973 to Dr. rer. nat. PhD. He then became a research assistant at the Institute for Marine Research in Warnemünde . In 1981 the doctorate B on the "theory of turbulent diffusion" followed to a Dr.sc.nat., This was after the reunification in the GDR to a Dr. rer. nat. habil. transformed. In 1988 Fennel was visiting professor at the University of Gothenburg and in 1994 he was appointed professor for physical oceanography in Rostock . In the meantime, he was visiting professor at the Nansen Center in Bergen (1995) and at the University of Baltimore (1996). He retired in 2013.

Fennel's main focus was on theoretical oceanography, numerical modeling, regional and Baltic Sea oceanography and ecosystem models.

From 1990 to 1991 he was deputy director at the Institute for Marine Research Warnemünde and, after it was absorbed by the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research, its deputy director until 2011. From 2011 to 2012 he was director of the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research. In addition, from 1992 to 2013 he was head of the Physical Oceanography and Metrology Section at the Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde and head of the working group Theoretical Oceanography and Modeling. In addition, from 2008 to 2012 he was President of the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR).
