Wolfgang Fischer fled the German Democratic Republic to the Federal Republic of Germany at the end of 1953 , where he joined the Stuttgarter Kickers . A year later he started as a West German athlete at the European Championships over 400 m hurdles , but retired in the preliminary run. A few weeks earlier he had secured the silver medal in the same discipline at the German Championships . The athlete was also successful at the Württemberg championships and was able to win the gold medal in all three hurdles (110 m, 200 m and 400 m). A year later he became German champion in the 400-meter hurdles at the German Championships in Frankfurt am Main . This was followed by two more silver and bronze medals at German championships and participation in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome . He started in the 400 meter hurdles , but retired in the preliminary run. Two years later he still managed to win the gold medal in this discipline at the South German championships.

In 1963 he married the sprinter and hurdler Renate Renz , who also started for the Stuttgarter Kickers.
