The Frankfurt LAB was founded at the end of 2009 on the initiative of Ensemble Modern , The Forsythe Company (since 2015 Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company ), Hessian Theater Academy , Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and Künstlerhaus Mousonturm . The Frankfurt LAB is housed in the premises of a former industrial building that was previously used as an outdoor theater for the Schauspiel Frankfurt .

The aim of the Frankfurt LAB is to combine the work of internationally renowned ensembles with the promotion of young artists and to bring contemporary dance , choreography , performance , theater and music into a creative exchange.

At the invitation of the partner institutions, artists can rehearse and present on two stages: Hall I offers space for up to 300 spectators and allows for flexible structures on a scene area of over 600 square meters - sound, light, video technology and audience positioning are individually set up here depending on requirements. The studio stage in Hall 2 measures around 350 square meters and, with a mostly permanently installed stand, is primarily available to students from the context of the Hessian Theater Academy.

After many years of support from the Frankfurt RheinMain Cultural Fund , the association has received institutional funding from the City of Frankfurt am Main's Cultural Office and the Hessian Ministry for Science and Art since 2018 . A foundation alliance (currently consisting of the BHF-BANK-Stiftung, the Stiftung Polytechnische Gesellschaft Frankfurt am Main, the Crespo Foundation and the Adolf and Luisa Haeuser Foundation for Art and Culture) and the partner institutions provide additional funds.

Since 2010, actors from politics and culture have been discussing the idea of a culture campus in the centrally located district of Bockenheim , where, in addition to the Frankfurt LAB, the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts is to receive a new building.

program

The Frankfurt LAB offers space for international guest performances, serves as a center for large-format festivals and the basis for cooperation and research projects at the interface between art, science and society. At the same time, it sees itself as a laboratory for future aesthetic developments: as a workplace and stage for the students, it integrates the training in a professional environment. The Frankfurt LAB also promotes young talent with the residency program and HTA postgraduate funding and tries to attract qualified artists to the region. The biennial F ° LAB Festival for Performing Arts is intended to provide an insight into the aesthetic diversity of its program.
