Wolfgang H. Berger

Wolfgang Helmut Berger (born October 5, 1937 in Erlangen ; † August 6, 2017 ) was a German - American oceanographer , geologist and micropalaeontologist .

Berger made his undergraduate degree in geology at the University of Erlangen in 1961 and received his master's degree from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1963 . In 1968 he received his PhD in oceanography from the University of California, San Diego . From 1968 to 1970 he conducted research at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and from 1970/71 he was an assistant at the Geological Institute of the University of Kiel . From 1971 he was first assistant professor and from 1981 professor at the Scripps Institution, where he was interim director in 1996/97. In 1997 he became director of the California Space Institute in San Diego. In 1977 and 1980 he was visiting professor at the University of Kiel and in 1987 he conducted research at the University of Bremen , where he was a visiting professor and co-initiator of a special research area (SFB) on the climate and environmental history of the South Atlantic until 2006.

He dealt in particular with the ecology of planktonic foraminifera and the reconstruction of the climate and marine environmental conditions in the Cenozoic . He is considered to be the co-founder of paleoceanography.

In 2012 he was awarded the Milutin Milankovic Medal of the European Geosciences Union . In 1998 he received the Gustav Steinmann Medal . In 1989 he received the Ewing Medal from the American Geophysical Union . In 1986 he received the Humboldt Research Prize , the Prince Albert I Medal in Monaco in 1991 and the Balzan Prize in 1993 . In 1979 he received the Bigelow Medal from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution . He was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . Since 2001 he was an external member of the Academia Europaea . In 2011 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bremen.
