Relationships

During his time at Audi, Hatz was a close confidante of Martin Winterkorn and Ulrich Hackenberg . In addition, he had very good relationships with the head of the VW Group and later chairman of the supervisory board and VW co-owner Ferdinand Piëch , which is why Winterkorn took him to VW in 2007.

VW exhaust scandal

In the wake of the VW emissions scandal , Wolfgang Hatz was given leave of absence in September 2015.

Hatz was arrested on September 28, 2017 in the course of the investigation into the VW emissions affair in Munich. He came into custody because of the risk of escape and blackout. Shortly after he was arrested, his lawyers appealed the warrant. According to the research network consisting of SZ , NDR and WDR, Hatz offered a bail of three million euros for his release from pretrial detention and agreed to meet further conditions. The regional court and the Munich Higher Regional Court rejected the appeal as unfounded; After more than six months in detention, Hatz filed a complaint with the Federal Constitutional Court . On June 26, 2018, he was released on bail of three million euros.
