Wolfgang Hicks (born September 22, 1909 in Hamburg , † March 23, 1983 in Bonn ) was a German cartoonist and illustrator .

Life

Hicks was a self-taught artist . Working as a commercial artist and stage decorator, he developed into a political cartoonist. In addition to Wilhelm Busch , Hicks referred to the Simplicissimus drawers Karl Arnold , Olaf Gulbransson and Thomas Theodor Heine as his role models . In 1928 he made his debut in the traditional “ Hamburger Fremdblatt ”.

From 1932 Hicks worked for the social democratic "Echo der Woche". When the National Socialists came to power, it was initially banned from signs. During this time, Hicks temporarily earned his living as a fashion attorney and as a poster and sign painter. After the ban on the profession was lifted, he drew for the Berliner Illustrierte , the Hamburger Anzeiger and the magazine Die Koralle as well as for the front newspaper of the Navy War Report Department West and occasionally for Das Reich .

After 1945 he accompanied current political events with a concise line and a reduced line in black and white for Stern and Die Zeit . In 1957, Hicks became the “house cartoonist” of the “ world ”. He illustrated various books. In 1966, Hicks was appointed professor at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts . Hicks died in Bonn in 1983. His drawing estate is in the House of History Foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany .
