Wolfgang Jäger (born December 22, 1734 in Nuremberg , † May 30, 1795 probably in Altdorf near Nuremberg ) was a German classical philologist , historian and university professor .

Life

Wolfgang Jäger was the only son of the gold and silver wire puller Johann Georg Jäger and his wife Kunigunda, née Wagner, and was actually intended for their parents' trade in Nuremberg. However, the boy preferred to devote himself to his intellectual interests and opted for an academic career. After the lower schools he graduated from the Nuremberg grammar school from 1749 and showed an inclination to study there, which from then on found support from the then rector of the school Nicolaus Schwebel . Therefore, in 1752 he moved to the nearby University of Altdorf . When it was founded in 1756, the philology student became a member of a language society founded by Georg Andreas Will , the Altdorfer Deutsche Gesellschaft. In 1758 he completed his university studies and returned to Nuremberg. There he gave private lessons in the following period .

In 1762 Jäger got a job at the Nuremberg grammar school and in 1767 became its vice-principal . However, the school practice attacked him too much. Already in 1772 he had the of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Altdorf master's degree obtained in 1773 followed the call as an associate professor of Western languages. In 1786 he became a full professor of the faculty and was also given the professorship of poetry . After Johann Andreas Michael Nagel died in 1788, he also took over the professorship of eloquence and the direction of its Latin Society. When Will was no longer able to fully fill his professorship, he also took over lectures on history.

Jäger remained unmarried because of his poor health. He is described as a withdrawn scholar who, however, fed students at his own expense. His historical lectures were also very popular. Jäger was buried on June 2, 1795 in Altdorf near Nuremberg.

Wolfgang Jäger is considered to be the founder of modern Konradin research. In addition to a translation of the Roman Panegryics in 1779/80, he wrote, among other things:
