Wolfgang Melzer

Wolfgang Melzer (born June 1, 1948 in Strang near Bad Rothenfelde) is a German educational scientist and school researcher .

Life

Melzer completed his Abitur in 1966 at the Carolinum Osnabrück high school . In 1971 he passed the first state examination for teaching at primary and secondary schools at the University of Education in Osnabrück and in 1975 he obtained a diploma in educational science from the University of Osnabrück . After his doctorate (1978) with a dissertation on the professional field and awareness of teachers, he worked between 1979 and 1987 as a research assistant for school and socialization research at Bielefeld University . There he completed his habilitation in 1986 with a habilitation thesis on the subject of “Parents and Schools” and received the venia legendi for the subject “ Pedagogy with a focus on socialization”. From 1987 to 1992 Melzer worked as a university lecturer at the Faculty of Education at Bielefeld University. From 1992 he took over the representation of the founding professorship for school pedagogy at the University of Rostock , until in 1993 he accepted the call to the professorship for school pedagogy with a focus on school research at the Technical University of Dresden . For many years Melzer was director of the Institute for School Education and Elementary School Education at the Faculty of Education and Managing Director of the Center for Teacher Training, School and Vocational Education Research .

Research activity

Following early studies on teacher research and on the cooperation between parents and school , three main areas were systematically pursued within the framework of the "Research Group on School Evaluation" founded by Melzer in 1993:

  • Studies on school quality and school development including the evaluation and scientific support of pilot projects
  • Studies on violence in school and on the social behavior of schoolchildren as well as development and evaluation of violence prevention strategies
  • Studies on the socialization and health of children and adolescents, etc. a. as part of the WHO studies “Health Behavior in School-aged Children” (HBSC).
