Wolfgang Reiter (born October 2, 1955 ) is an Austrian cultural scientist , author and theater director .

Life

His career began with a degree in theater studies and journalism at the University of Vienna (graduation Dr. phil. In 1984). Even during his studies he devoted himself to practical theater work as a founding member (together with Justus Neumann) and dramaturge of the Viennese theater group “Narrnkastl”. From 1984 to 1987 he worked as a freelancer in the cultural department of Austrian TV ( ORF ) and then moved to the Vienna city newspaper “ Falter ” as an editor until 1989 . He then became a freelance theater critic, including for " Musik & Theater " and the " Neue Zürcher Zeitung ", where he worked until 2000.

In addition to his journalistic work, from 1985 to 1995, as a founding member and board member of the Institute for Cultural Studies (IKUS) in Vienna , Reiter also devoted himself to scientific studies (including on youth culture, nutritional culture and multiculturalism) as well as advice on cultural policy and concepts (including on Viennese theater funding and regional Cultural development in the new Lower Austrian provincial capital St. Pölten ). In 1992 he also took up a position as a manager in the “Office 95/96” for the conception of the cultural program of the Austrian Federal Government on the occasion of the millennium and the anniversary of the founding of the 2nd Republic.

Two years later he switched to the Austrian news magazine “ Profil ” as culture editor and theater critic , and from 2000 onwards he returned to practical theater work: until 2003 as chief dramaturge at the Graz festival “ Steirischer Herbst ”, from 2004 to 2008 as artistic director and director of the theater at Neumarkt Zurich and as a director (including in 2008 his version of Wolf Haas ' novel “ The Weather 15 Years Ago ” at the Vienna Theater Drachengasse ). As a dramaturge and theater manager, Reiter developed and supervised world premieres as well as commissioned productions and the like. a. by Elfriede Jelinek , Valère Novarina , Kathrin Röggla , Josef Winkler , Martin Suter and Händl Klaus (whose play "Wilde or the Man with Sad Eyes" was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen and the Mülheimer Theatertage in 2004).

From 2009 Reiter focused his work again primarily on his journalistic, cultural studies and curatorial work with projects and the like. a. as part of the Styrian culture festival “ Regionale ” (“Essgeschichten”, 2010), in the film and television industry (scripts, treatments) and (together with Hanni Rützler ) studies, publications and events on food culture.

Since 2014 he has worked continuously as a dramaturge with the choreographer and director Christine Gaigg , u. a. in the stage essay "Maybe the way you made love twenty years ago is the answer?" (WP, Steirischer Herbst , 2014) and the performance "untitled (look, look, come closer)" to a composition by Klaus Schedl (WP, Impulstanz Vienna, 2015).
