Wolfgang Richter (theologian)

Wolfgang Richter (born December 19, 1926 in Brusque ; † March 20, 2015 ) was a German Old Testament scholar .

Life

Richter studied Semitic Studies and was an assistant in Tübingen and Bonn , where he did his theological dissertation with Gerhard Johannes Botterweck . After completing his habilitation thesis in Munich in 1965 , he taught there from 1966 to 1983 as a private lecturer , as an adjunct professor and finally as a full professor for the introduction and exegesis of the Old Testament and biblical-oriental languages ​​in succession to Vinzenz Hamp . In 1983 he changed to the chair for Hebrew and Ugaritic linguistics and literary studies at the Institute for Assyriology and Hittite Studies in the Faculty of Classical Studies and Cultural Studies at LMU Munich. From 1986 to 1991 he took over the chair of Hebrew and Ugaritic studies.

He showed increasing scientific interest in the syntactic-semantic continuation of the comprehensive research program of the "Foundations of an ancient Hebrew grammar" and in research in the field of linguistic data processing as a way to computer-aided text analysis. In 1986 he began to introduce computer-aided methods for language and text analysis as part of the pilot project Input and Linguistic Analysis of Old Testament Texts ; from this emerges the Biblia Hebraica transcripta project . In 1994 he retired .

Richter was editor of the book series Studies on the Old and New Testament (StANT) and founder of the series Works on Text and Language in the Old Testament (ATS).
