Wolfgang Riedel (football referee)

Wolfgang Riedel (born December 19, 1929 in Finkenkrug ; †  November 12, 2007 in Berlin ) was a football referee and sports official in the GDR.

Riedel began playing soccer at SG Finkenkrug when he was ten years old and was active there until 1952.

At the end of 1952 he directed his first games as a referee in the 2nd district class. In 1955 he received approval for the third-class II. GDR league , moved up to the first GDR league in 1958 and, from 1960, headed games in the top GDR football class, the league . Riedel had been a FIFA referee since 1964 . Between 1952 and 1978 he completed 1194 assignments as a game master and linesman. He was the referee of the FDGB Cup final twice : in 1965 between SC Aufbau Magdeburg and SC Motor Jena (2: 1) and in 1973 between 1. FC Magdeburg and 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig (3: 2).

As a FIFA referee, he played 44 international matches and was a referee in 11 international matches.

Full -time lawyer , Riedel worked as head of the finance department at Berlin's Humboldt University . He remained in football as a functionary even after his active referee time. For the DFV of the GDR he worked as a member of the referee commission, later at the North East German Football Association (NOFV) as treasurer and referee observer. As treasurer of the regional association he was responsible for the financial affairs of the NOFV from 1990 to 2004. He was also a committed member of various DFB and UEFA committees .

For his achievements, Wolfgang Riedel received the gold DFB badge and the NOFV honorary plaque. He has been an honorary member of the NOFV since 2004.
