Wolfgang Schreml (also Wolfgang Ottmar Schreml; * 1937 in Hof ) is a German oncologist and university professor .

Life

In 1962 Schreml received his doctorate from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with a thesis on the subject of determining chlorine and calcium using the ultra-micro method according to MC Sanz . His habilitation thesis, submitted to Ulm University in 1974, was on the subject of the radiotoxic effect of incorporated tritium on the developing mammalian organism, studies of dosimetry and relative biological effectiveness .

In 1972 Schreml founded the oncological working group at the Ulm University Hospital together with Hermann Heimpel . The oncological working group served the cooperation of surgery , radiation therapy , pathology , internal medicine and basic research in the diagnosis and therapy of cancer diseases. The Ulm Tumor Center emerged from this working group in the early 1980s, and Schreml was its secretary until 1985. This tumor center developed into the Comprehensive Cancer Center Ulm (CCCU) in 2006 .

In 1985 Schreml moved from the Ulm University Hospital to the Günzburg District Hospital , where he became chief physician in the internal medicine department . In 2002 Schreml retired.

Research areas

Schreml's main interest was cancer research, especially breast cancer research .

A particular concern of Schreml was palliative medicine , in order to enable the patient to live and die in dignity despite great pain. He integrated palliative medicine into the inpatient process. At his request, this project was funded by the German Cancer Aid from 1995 to 1998 .

Memberships and social engagement

In 1997 Schreml founded the Raphael Hospice Association Günzburg and became its first chairman. He held this office until 2015. The association serves the dying and grief accompaniment of patients and their relatives.

After Schreml went into retirement, he founded the project “Palliative medicine in rural areas with the participation of a medical palliative consultancy service”. As a result, from 2003 to 2005 patients could receive palliative care on an outpatient basis by trained doctors. Schreml himself worked in this project as a voluntary outpatient consultant doctor.

From 2006 to 2018 Schreml was a member of the ethics committee of the Caritas Association of the Diocese of Augsburg. He was also involved in the Focolare Movement and organized the Ottmaringer Hospice Days.

Awards

In 2007 Schreml was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his work in the field of palliative medicine and the hospice movement. In 2019, Bishop Konrad Zdarsa awarded Schreml the papal cross of honor Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice in recognition of special services in the concerns of the Pope and the Church . In the laudation his endeavors to attach great importance to the spiritual accompaniment of the sick in addition to medical care was particularly emphasized.
