Life

Heimpel studied medicine in Göttingen , Heidelberg , Innsbruck , Freiburg and Chicago . He received his doctorate in 1957 with a dissertation on the subject of examinations on blood flow regulation in the canine kidney and completed his internal specialist training in Freiburg with Ludwig Heilmeyer . After his habilitation with a thesis on the subject of examinations with Cr51 and DFP32 on the erythrocyte turnover in various blood diseases in Freiburg, he went to Ulm in 1967 . There he became a professor at Ulm University in 1969

In 1972 Heimpel founded the oncological working group at Ulm University Hospital together with Wolfgang Schreml . The oncological working group served the cooperation of surgery , radiation therapy , pathology , internal medicine and basic research in the diagnosis and therapy of cancer diseases. The Ulm Tumor Center emerged from this working group in the early 1980s. This tumor center developed into the Comprehensive Cancer Center Ulm (CCCU) in 2006 .

Heimpel was Vice-Rector of Ulm University from 1981 to 1991 . From 1969 to 1996 he was Medical Director for Internal Medicine at the University Hospital Ulm and, as Director, headed the Department for Hematology , Oncology and Infectious Diseases at the Center for Internal Medicine. From 1970 to 1982 he was dean of studies, from 1983 to 1985 dean of the medical faculty and member of the Senate of Ulm University.

family

Heimpel was the second oldest child of the German historian Hermann Heimpel (1901–1988) and the German educator and social worker Elisabeth Heimpel , née Sophie Elisabeth Michel (1902–1972). The couple had 5 children:

  • Erika (* 1929) married to Ulrich Huber (* 1936)
  • Hermann (1930-2014)
  • Elisabeth, married to Hans Erich Troje (1934–2017)
  • Christian (* 1937), author of the book Report on a Thief, in which he deals with the false accusation of being a thief, of which he became a victim at the age of 8.
  • Wolfgang (* 1940)

From 1943 the family stayed for a few years together with the family of Ernst Rudolf Huber , who also had 5 children, near Falkau in the Black Forest . Elisabeth Heimpel had inherited a larger house there. During this time, the 10 children received lessons from their parents, with Elisabeth Heimpel teaching natural history .

Heimpel was married and had 4 children.

Research areas

Heimpel did research in the field of blood diseases such as leukemia and rare congenital forms of anemia , especially aplastic anemia . He dealt with the diagnosis and therapy of agranulocytosis and leukemia. Together with Klaus Schwarz he discovered the gene that is changed in congenital dyserythropoietic anemia (CDA). He classified the dyserythropoietic anemia and set up a registry for further research. Heimpel was one of the pioneers in successful bone marrow transplantation . Through his activities, the DFG research group experimental and clinical leukemia research was brought into being. In addition, the special research areas “Cell System Physiology” and “Lympho-Hemopoiesis” were created.

Memberships and social engagement

Heimpel was from 1990 to 1996 chairman of the German Society for Hematology and Medical Oncology and editor of the journal "Blut". As its chairman, he promoted the creation of medical guidelines for better patient care. Heimpel was a member of the Oncology Advisory Board, which he helped found in 1983, for 12 years. At the age of over 80, he was patient ombudsperson at the university hospital.

He represented this matter as dean of studies, dean, in the presidium of the faculty council and as a member of the Murrhardter Kreis. Heimpel held the lecture "Clinic for Preclinicals" until the end of his life. Here he also went into the "social and psychosomatic aspects" of being sick and sick.

In 2010 the working group of tumor centers, oncological focus areas and oncological working groups Baden-Württemberg honored Heimpel for his life's work and his services in cancer medicine. In 2014 Heimpel was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg for the improved care of cancer patients in Baden-Württemberg, the establishment of the Ulm Tumor Center and the State Advisory Board on Oncology.
