Johannes Wolfgang Adolf Werner Soergel (born January 28, 1887 in Weimar , † July 26, 1946 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German geologist and paleontologist.

Life

After graduating from high school in Weimar, Wolfgang Soergel studied geology from 1907 at the University of Greifswald (among others with Otto Jaekel ) and at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , where he received his doctorate summa cum laude in 1910 with Wilhelm Deecke . He then worked as an assistant in Freiburg and completed his habilitation in 1916 with Josef Felix Pompeckj at the University of Tübingen (Loss, Ice Ages and Paleolithic Cultures, 1919), where he became an associate professor in 1919 (inaugural lecture The Permanence of Continents and Oceans ). In 1926 he succeeded Hans Cloos as professor at the University of Breslau and in 1931 he succeeded Deecke as professor of geology and paleontology in Freiburg, where he remained until his death. His successor in Freiburg was Max Pfannenstiel .

Among other things, he dealt with the stratigraphy of the Ice Age and recognized the importance of periglacial deposits (loess, gravel terraces), which he then examined in Thuringia (on the Ilm ) in 1924 and differentiated 11 cold phases. In 1925 he correlated this with the radiation curves of Milutin Milanković .

He also dealt with the reconstruction of the Chirotherium causer.

In August 1912 he was one of the 34 founding members of the Paleontological Society , became a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences in 1931 and a member of the Leopoldina in 1927 .

He had been married since 1926.

The main building of the Senckenberg Research Institute for Quaternary Paleontology in Weimar is named in his honor.
