Life

Wilhelm Deecke, son of the historian and grammar school director Wilhelm Deecke , received his PhD from the University of Strasbourg in 1884. phil. nat. PhD. In 1886 he completed his habilitation at the University of Greifswald , in 1893 he became an associate professor of geology and palaeontology , and in 1905 a full professor. In 1906 he became a full professor at the University of Freiburg, succeeding Gustav Steinmann, who moved to Bonn . From 1907 to 1928 he was director of the geological state institute of Baden . In August 1912 he was one of the 34 founding members of the Paleontological Society .

Wilhelm Deecke is considered the "father" of the geology of Pomerania . In his 20 years at the University of Greifswald , he wrote numerous geological and palaeontological works, which he summarized in his 1907 "Geology of Pomerania". Furthermore, Deecke gained great importance for archaeological research when in 1922 he became the managing director of the committee for prehistory and early history and the first editor of the Baden find reports during the reorganization of the Baden heritage preservation . Since the late 1880s, Deecke had been grappling with archaeological topics from a geological perspective. When he was appointed to Freiburg, he also became co-director of the Museum of Prehistory , and his inaugural lecture dealt with “Geology and Prehistory”. His work on prehistoric flint use (1933), which is still important today, should also be emphasized .

His student Erich Hildebrand named the Triassic sea lily Moenocrinus deeckei Hildebrand in his honor in 1926.

Wilhelm Deecke married Johanna Henriette Maria Refardt (* 1876; † 1937) in 1900. The marriage produced three daughters.
