Hans Wehrli (geologist)

Hans Wehrli (born June 29, 1902 in Winterthur , †  January 17, 1978 in Greifswald ) was a Swiss - German geologist and paleontologist . From 1937 he was professor at the University of Münster and from 1954 at the University of Greifswald , where he also headed the Geological-Paleontological Institute from 1956 to 1967 and was the rector from 1959 to 1964.

Life

Hans Wehrli was born in Winterthur in 1902 and studied geology from 1921 at the Universities of Zurich , Göttingen , Würzburg , Vienna and at the University of Leipzig , where he received his doctorate in 1928 . In 1929 he obtained German citizenship . A year later he was at the University of Cologne habilitation , which he in the following years as a lecturer worked and was promoted to associate professor 1,936th In 1933 he joined the NSDAP and the SA . In 1937 he moved to the University of Münster as professor and curator of the Geological-Paleontological Institute , where he was released after the Second World War as part of the denazification in 1946. In the following period he carried out mapping work for the Academy for Spatial Research and Regional Planning .

In 1951 he was reinstated as a custodian in Münster without a license to teach. In January 1954, Hans Wehrli was offered a guest professorship at the University of Greifswald , where he became professor with a teaching assignment in September of the same year. After he moved to the German Democratic Republic (GDR) a year later , he was appointed full professor of palaeontology and historical geology in 1957 . From 1956 to 1967 he worked as director of the Geological-Paleontological Institute of Greifswald University, as its rector from 1959 to 1964. In addition, he was from 1958 to 1963 for the Kulturbund der DDR a member of the district assembly of the Rostock district . He retired in 1967 and died in Greifswald in 1978.

Awards

Hans Wehrli received the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver in 1959 and was made an honorary member in 1964 by the Geological Society in the GDR, which he headed from 1958 to 1964 as first chairman.
