From the beginning, Wolfgang Zelmer was interested in still life. In 1975 the first graphics were created in the Josef Werner workshop in Munich. In color etchings and lithographs of the early work, everyday things, but also architectural forms or portrait and anatomy studies, inspired by great masters, are used as pictorial elements. From 1986 onwards, an intensive examination of classical still life painting, especially Japanese, Italian and Dutch models, became evident in the artist's work. Motifs from the world of plants and animals were increasingly selected. At the beginning of the 1990s, Wolfgang Zelmer's work developed into an original imagery with well thought-out compositions of extremely subtle colors and masterful representation. Enigmatic expression and classic symbolism refer to the discussion of the relationship between man and nature as mystical still lifes . Characteristic of Zelmer's art are also construction drawings, captions and old documents that the artist uses as picture elements in his unique pieces. Another characteristic is the elaboration of a high atmospheric density and meaning. The still life placed in a wide landscape is also a fundamental theme. The work of Wolfgang Zelmer has been looked after, documented and represented by Galerie & Edition Bode since 1989 .
