The Volgazander or Steinschill ( Sander volgensis , Syn . : Stizostedion volgensis ) is a fish from the family of the real perch (Percidae).

features

The fish is smaller than the common pikeperch . It becomes a maximum of 40 to 50 centimeters long and weighs two kilograms. It has dark stripes on its body that do not dissolve into spots. It has no noticeably larger (fang) teeth in its mouth. The whole front gill cover is covered with scales. Even Francis Willughby had clearly stated that there are two types of walleye in the Austrian Danube.

Occurrence

He inhabits the deeper sandy river sections of the Danube , the Volga up to the Urals . He likes to hide in dense bank overhangs. Sometimes it can also be found in brackish water . The water temperature is comfortable for him between 8 and 22 ° C with a pH value between 7.2 and 8.0.

The Volga zander has only recently returned to the Czech Republic . It is mainly seen in the flat sections of the March and Thaya rivers .

In the Red List of the IUCN is Sander volgensis "not at risk" ( "least concern") classified. In 2004 the species was classified as "near threatened".

Reproduction

The Volgazander spawns in shallow places from April to May. As with the pikeperch, the male also takes care of the brood in the Volga zander.

Way of life

The Volgazander usually goes for food in the evening or at night. He also eats food in the coolest season, which consists mainly of fish and small crabs. It prefers to catch perch .
