Sander ( Syn .: Stizostedion ) is a genus within the family of the real perch . Some species are important edible fish.
features
Sanders are elongated, laterally slightly flattened fish, which, depending on the species, can reach a body length of 40 ( Volgazander ) to a little over 100 centimeters ( glass eye perch ) and in the case of pikeperch a weight of up to 20 kg. They have two separate dorsal fins , a terminal mouth and over 40 scales along the lateral line organ . The swim bladder develops a process on both sides of the esophagus towards the occiput and middle ear, which improves the sense of hearing.
species
The genus comprises five species , two of which are found in North America ( S. canadensis and S. vitreus ) and three in Eurasia ( S. lucioperca , S. marinus , and S. volgensis ):
- Canadian pikeperch ( Sander canadensis )
- Zander ( Sander lucioperca )
- Sea pikeperch or sea zander ( Sander marinus )
- Eyeglasses or American pikeperch ( Sander vitreus )
- Volgazander , Steinschill or Berschlik ( Sander volgensis )
Taxonomy
The former generic name Stizostedion Rafinesque, 1820 was renamed in 1997 by Maurice Kottelat to Sander ( Cuvier ) Oken in 1817 , the renaming was supported by the Committee on Names of Fishes (a joint committee of the American Fisheries Society and the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists ), The Change is controversial and discussed.
