Wolrad IV. (* July 7, 1588 at Eisenberg Castle ; † October 6, 1640 in Arolsen ) was Count von Waldeck and founder of the newer Waldeck-Eisenberg line of the Waldeck family .

Life

Residence Waldeck Castle on Edersee in Hesse

He was the younger son of Count Josias I von Waldeck-Eisenberg and his wife Maria von Barby. Since his father's territorial policy, Wolrad has increasingly come into conflict with the neighboring Landgraviate of Hesse , which had exerted considerable influence on the country during the Reformation . The conflict arose when the city of Korbach removed the count's city judge in 1615 and asked the landgrave for a new judge. The Counts of Waldeck took action against this. This led to the intervention of the Hessians, who now not only claimed the feudal rule, but also the sovereignty over Waldeck. In 1621, Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel even had troops march into Waldeck. At times Wolrad had to flee the country. Taking advantage of family connections, he entered the Dutch States General and successfully asked the governor Moritz von Orange-Nassau for support. His brother Christian turned to Emperor Ferdinand II. By order of the Emperor, the Hessians had to vacate the occupied land again.

In 1625, the county of Pyrmont fell to him and his brother Christian . Since then they have called themselves Counts of Waldeck-Pyrmont. During the Thirty Years' War , the Waldeckers were ousted from Pyrmont, but later got the county back. In 1639, Wolrad's wife inherited the county of Cuylenburg in what is now the Netherlands and several other lordships in the possession of the House of Waldeck.

Wolrad was a member of the Fruit Bringing Society with the company name Der Frühespate . He died in 1640 and was buried in the St. Kilian Church in Korbach .
