origin

Wolrad, from the Waldeck family , was the youngest of seven sons of Count Wolrad IV of Waldeck (1588-1640), the founder of the newer Waldeck-Eisenberg line, and his wife Anna von Baden-Durlach (1587-1649). His brother Philipp Dietrich (1614–1645) followed his father in 1640 as Count von Waldeck zu Eisenberg. His brother Georg Friedrich (1620-1692) became German field marshal , Dutch captain general, 1664 Count von Waldeck-Eisenberg and 1682 Prince von Waldeck.

Life

Wolrad became a soldier. In 1655 he entered the service of Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg as a colonel with his infantry regiment and fought in the Second Northern War, first against, then from June 1656 for Karl X. Gustav of Sweden . The regiment brought two three-pound regimental cannons with them, an innovation that was subsequently adopted by other Brandenburg infantry regiments.

In 1656 he became major general , and in the battle of Warsaw (28-30 July 1656), which was victorious for Sweden and Brandenburg , his regiment fought on 29 and 30 July in the center of the Swedish-Brandenburg order of battle. His older brother Georg Friedrich commanded the Brandenburg and Swedish cavalry in the battle .

Wolrad fell ill with smallpox in the field camp in Masuria in January 1657 and died. At the instigation of his brother Georg Friedrich, his body was transferred to Korbach and buried in the local Nikolaikirche .
