Women's Division One Ice Hockey League
The Division One - also Division I - was after the Women's Premier Ice Hockey League (also British Women's Premier Ice Hockey League ) from the 1996/97 season to the 2014/15 season, the second-highest level of the women's ice hockey league in Great Britain . Since 2015 it became the third highest league due to the formation of a new highest league, the Elite League. The league is organized by the English Ice Hockey Association , the English association under the umbrella of the British Ice Hockey Association Ice Hockey UK . A structured league has been known since the 1996/97 season. It has been played out in regional groups for several years.
Structure of the league
In 1984 an English women's ice hockey league was held for the first time. Five teams initially took part in this Women's English League . From the following year, it was increased to seven participants. From 1988, the then called British Women's League took on other teams and split into three regional divisions, each with four to seven teams. But after just two seasons, a single-track top Premier Division was created in 1990 , below which two regional groups, the North Division and the South Division, and in some years a third, the Midlands Division, were formed. With the Conference League , a third league level, also regionally structured, was installed in 1995. The two or three winners of the divisions or the conferences play out the winner of the league among themselves. The winner of the final of the divisions had the right to play against the bottom of the Premier League for the right to start in the top division. In a few years, in addition to the " Final Four " round, a relegation round or promotion qualification was played out.
