Wymeer is located in the extreme southwest of the East Frisian Rheiderland between the A 31 and the German-Dutch border. A good 1,300 inhabitants live in the town on an area of around 23 square kilometers. Wymeer is a village in the municipality of Bunde . Mayor is Richard Bloem.

history

Wymeer was founded in the Middle Ages, the first mention as "Wymaria" comes from the year 1319 and documents a Johanniter branch that had existed for a long time at that time . The establishment was probably related to the Johanniterkommende Dünebroek , which was dissolved after the Reformation. There is still a district called Kloster Dünebroek, but there is a farmhouse there today.

In the late Middle Ages, the settlement had to be relocated several times due to dollar slumps . As a place close to the East Frisian border with Münster and the Netherlands, Wymeer suffered heavily in numerous wars and feuds. In the 19th century many Wymeersters left their homeland for the new world.

After the Second World War, the Netherlands made territorial claims to Germany, but these were only given very little consideration by the Allies. However, the Dutch in Wymeer were awarded a 100 meter wide strip on the border, which Wymeer farmers were only allowed to enter with a special pass. The area did not return until 1963.

In 1973 Wymeer joined the Samtgemeinde Bunde, although the place actually traditionally had more connections to Weener . Finally, on November 1, 2001, the joint congregation was converted into a unified congregation. Since then Wymeer has been part of Bunde.

Since 1983, the 52  hectares of extensive bog Wymeer designated as a nature reserve.

Religious communities

The Wymeer Baptist Congregation existed as an independent body from 1921 to 2016. Their church, the so-called Friedenskapelle , was sold in 2017.

Public institutions and associations

The neighboring village of Boen also falls within the catchment area of all these institutions .
