Xiaodong Wang ( Chinese  王曉東  /  王晓东 , Pinyin Wāng Xiǎodōng ; * 1963 in Wuhan , People's Republic of China ) is an American biochemist and molecular biologist .

Life

Wang graduated from Peking University of Education with a degree in biology in 1984 and a Ph.D. from Richard Padgett of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 1991 from Richard Padgett. in biochemistry . As a postdoctoral fellow , he worked with Nobel Prize winners Michael S. Brown and Joseph L. Goldstein on cholesterol regulation by the protein SREBP . In 1995 Wang received his first professorship (Assistant Professor) and his own laboratory at the Department of Biochemistry at Emory University in Atlanta , Georgia , where he began to study apoptosis and its regulation intensively . In 1996, Wang returned to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center under the new head of biochemistry there, Steve McKnight . Since 1997, Wang has also been doing research for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute .

Today (as of 2012) Wang is doing research at the National Institute of Biological Sciences in Beijing , of which he is co-director. Wang is married.

Act

Wang is considered a pioneer in researching the effector mechanisms of apoptosis , which take place in the cytosol along the mitochondria . Wang identified and characterized the apoptosome complex of cytochrome c , apaf-1 and caspase -9, which causes cell death. In addition, Wang discovered other apoptosis regulator proteins , including DFF , EndoG and SMAC . Wang's research showed a metabolic pathway in and out of the mitochondrion and nucleus .
