International King Faisal Prize
The International King Faisal Prize (English King Faisal International Prize ; Arabic جائزة الملك فيصل العالمية, DMG Ǧāʾizat al-Malik Faiṣal al-ʿālamīya ) is an international award awarded in several categories by the King Faisal Foundation (King Faisal Foundation, founded in 1976). It honors services to Islam, Islamic studies , Arabic language and literature , medicine and science . It was founded in 1977 and is named in honor of King Faisal ibn Abd al-Aziz of Saudi Arabia , the son of the state's founder. The annually awarded prize comes with a gold medal, a Diwani certificate and $ 200,000 in prize money. It is awarded by the King of Saudi Arabia in a solemn ceremony in Riyadh .
In some years, no prizes are awarded at all in the individual categories.
The winners for “Services to Islam” include Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (2010), the kings Chalid ibn Abd al-Aziz , Fahd ibn Abd al-Aziz and Abdullah ibn Abd al-Aziz , the Frenchman Roger Garaudy and various institutions. In 2015 the Salafist television preacher Zakir Naik was awarded this prize.
The winners in Islamic Studies include the Turkish Orientalist emeritus Fuat Sezgin (1979) and Roshdi Rashed in 2007 .
