Michael Graetzel (2010)

Michael Graetzel (born May 11, 1944 in Dorfchemnitz , Saxony ) is a Swiss chemist of German descent. He is a professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne and has been named one of the world's 50 leading scientists by Scientific American . From Thomson Reuters he is in four categories ( chemistry , physics , engineering and materials science than) Highly Cited Researcher out.

Life

Grätzel studied chemistry at the Free University of Berlin with a diploma in 1968. From 1969 to 1972 he was a research assistant at the Hahn ‐ Meitner Institute . In 1971 he was at Arnim Henglein with the work of short-lived pulse radiolytical investigation nitrogen-oxygen compounds in aqueous solution in physical chemistry at the Technical University of Berlin PhD . From 1972 to 1974 the Petroleum Research Foundation of the American Chemical Society funded a postdoctoral fellowship with J. Kerry Thomas at the University of Notre Dame in the USA. He then worked again as a research assistant at the Hahn-Meitner Institute in Berlin until 1976. In addition, from 1975 until his habilitation in 1976 he was a lecturer in photochemistry and physical chemistry at the Free University of Berlin. From 1977 to 1981 he held a position as Associated Professor of Physical Chemistry at the École Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne. In 1981 he was appointed professor and director of the Laboratory of Photonics and Interfaces at EPFL.

Michael Grätzel played a key role in developing a new type of solar cell , the so-called Grätzel cell . It is claimed that such cells are cheaper to manufacture than traditional silicon-based solar cells and that they perform better, especially in low light. Such cells are now commercially manufactured in small numbers. The efficiency of commercial modules is significantly lower than that of silicon-based solar cells. Michael Graetzel has received a large number of honors and prizes for his research and for his contribution to energy generation from (sun) light and has been a candidate for a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for years .

Grätzel is the author of over 1100 publications, two books and the owner of more than 50 patents. According to Google Scholar, his work has already been cited around 290,000 times, with an h-index of over 243 in June 2018 . As of March 2015, with an h-index of 185, it was ranked 13th among the scientists with the highest h-index based on data from Google Scholar.
