Omar Yaghi

Omar Mwannes Yaghi (* 1965 in Amman , Jordan ) is an American chemist and professor at the University of California, Berkeley .

Life

Omar M. Yaghi studied at the University at Albany, The State University of New York , where he received his Bachelor's degree in 1984 . In 1990 Yaghi received his PhD from the University of Illinois . He then spent three years as NSF - Fellow in Harvard . He then went to Arizona State University before moving to the University of Michigan in 1999 as Robert W. Parry Collegiate Professor . From January 2006 to 2012 he worked at the University of California, Los Angeles .

Yaghi is researching metal organic frameworks and other scaffolds that can store hydrogen or carbon dioxide and release it again when required.

In 2007 he received the Newcomb Cleveland Prize from the AAAS for best scientific work and for exceptional achievement in science. Also in 2007 he was awarded the Materials Research Society Medal. In 2010 he received the Centenary Prize from the Royal Society of Chemistry . In 2015 he was awarded the König Faisal Prize in the science category and in 2017 the Albert Einstein World Award of Science and the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award . In 2018 he received the Wolf Prize for Chemistry, and in 2019 he was awarded the Gregori Aminoff Prize . Also in 2019, Yaghi was elected to the National Academy of Sciences . In 2020 he received the August Wilhelm von Hofmann medal .
