action
Port Huron , Michigan , early 1860s. Thomas Alva Edison's family lives here . Tom is a wild young fellow who feels misunderstood by many. Only his mother Nancy and his sister Tannie understand him. His relationship with his teacher Lavina Howard is particularly problematic. After detonating a stink bomb in the school building, he is expelled from school. His father Sam is angry with him, but his mother continues to defend him and now teaches him herself. However, when Tom saves the life of Mr. McCarney's little son, he makes a friend. McCarney gives him work. But even with this job he is unlucky because he sets a train and a car on fire. He is now turning the entire Port Huron community against him. He considers leaving the city forever, but gives up that idea when his mother becomes seriously ill. For the operation on the mother, the treating doctor needs stronger light. Tom breaks into a store and steals a mirror that intensifies the light. The stronger light actually saves his mother's life; his theft is celebrated as a heroic deed. He finally wins the heart of the community when, through his ingenuity, he prevents a serious train accident. Now he has also won the support of his father, who proudly announces to his wife that in future he will only be referred to as the father of the famous Thomas Alva Edison.
