Harry Shannon (born June 13, 1890 in Saginaw , Michigan , † July 27, 1964 in Hollywood , California ) was an American actor. He played mostly in westerns .

life and career

The Irish-born Harry Shannon grew up on a farm in Michigan. At the age of 15, he joined a wandering theater company and built a reputation as an entertainer in musicals, comedies and vaudeville shows. In November 1926 he made his Broadway debut as a pastor in the comedy Oh, Kay! . By 1939 he was seen in a total of nine plays on Broadway and was a member of Joseph Schildkraut's respected Theater Guild during that time . In 1929 he shot his first film - with the start of the sound film. In the 1930s, he played mostly in now forgotten short film comedies, but without achieving greater success. From 1940 he mainly focused on his film career. In 1941 he played the depraved father of the title character in Orson Welles ' respected film classic Citizen Kane . He also has supporting roles in the Welles films The Lady of Shanghai and Under the Signs of Evil .

In addition, Shannon distinguished himself primarily as a supporting actor in numerous smaller and larger westerns. The tall, early gray actor often played rural but kind-hearted sheriffs, officers, or fathers. While most of his roles remained small, he occasionally played leading roles in smaller films, including in the small drama Someone to Remember (1943) by Robert Siodmak . In the mid-1950s, Shannon turned more and more to television and had guest roles on series such as At the Foot of the Blue Mountains and The People of Shiloh Ranch . Shannon had his last film role as a grandfather in the comedy Gypsy - Queen of the Night alongside Rosalind Russell and Karl Malden . In total, he made over 200 film and television appearances by 1963. He died in 1964 at the age of 74 and was buried in Hollywood Forever Cemetery .
