Yttrium (III) sulfide is an inorganic chemical compound of the element yttrium with sulfur and belongs to the group of sulfides .

Extraction and presentation

Yttrium (III) sulfide can be obtained by reacting yttrium (III) oxide with hydrogen sulfide at 1460 ° C.

It is also possible to display it by reacting elementary yttrium with sulfur in an evacuated glass tube which is placed in a 2-zone furnace. The zone temperatures are 400 ° C and 100 ° C. After all the sulfur has reacted, the ampoule is tempered at 1000 ° C and the compound is obtained in polycrystalline form:

properties

Yttrium (III) sulfide is a moisture-sensitive yellow solid. It has a cubic crystal structure and a band gap of 2.58 eV. Yttrium (III) sulfide is used in tube technology and in the semiconductor industry (for doping ).
