Yucca baileyi subsp. intermedia (English common name "Intermediate Yucca") is a subspecies of the plant species Yucca baileyi in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

Yucca baileyi subsp. intermedia grows solitary to group-forming and forms three to four rosettes. It is stemless, but sometimes with stems up to 30 cm in height. The flexible, pliable, yellow-green to green leaves are 30 to 60 cm long and 0.5 to 1.5 cm wide. They form fine fibers on the leaf margins.

The racemose inflorescence that begins in the leaves protrudes over the leaves and is 1 to 1.5 meters high. The pendulous, bell-shaped, spherical, white to cream-colored flowers are 5 to 6 cm in length and 2 to 2.5 cm in diameter. This subspecies already blooms in its youth stage, while the subspecies Yucca baileyi subsp. baileyi flowers in the adult stage. The flowering period extends from May to June.

Occurrence

Yucca baileyi subsp. intermedia is distributed in the state of New Mexico in plains and on flat hills in different soils on the edge of coniferous forests with pine and juniper species at altitudes between 1500 and 2000 meters. It grows together with Toumeya papyracantha , Mammillaria wrightii , Echinocereus fendleri , Echinocereus triglochidiatus , Echinocereus viridiflorus and various other species of cactus .

Yucca baileyi subsp. intermedia is frost hardy to minus 18 ° C in Central Europe . It is rare in the collections.
