Yucca constricta (English common name : Buckley Yucca) is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

Yucca constricta grows solitary, without trunk or with trunks 0.5 to 1 meter in height, or in groups. The flexible, grass-like, pliable, finely fibrous, green to blue-green leaves are 20 to 50 cm long and 1.5 cm wide.

The branched inflorescence that begins in the leaves protrudes far beyond the leaves, is up to 3 meters high and is an impressive sight during the flowering period. The tubular flowers are 2.5 to 4 cm long and 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter. The six identical bloom bracts are white to cream-colored. The flowering time is in May.

Occurrence

Yucca constricta is endemic in Texas in the Chihuahua Desert from the southeastern Edwards Plateau south towards the Gulf of Mexico in plains and on flat rocky hills at altitudes between 280 and 1230 meters. This species often grows in association with various types of cacti .

Yucca constricta is frost hardy to minus 18 ° C in Central Europe with protection in the winter months . It is rare in collections.

Systematics

This species is closely related to Yucca campestris and both show some morphological similarities with the east coast representatives of the series Filamentosae Yucca filamentosa and Yucca flaccida . He is a representative of the Chaenocarpa Series Glaucae section .

The first description by Samuel Botsford Buckley was published in 1863.
