The Sagging Yucca ( Yucca flaccida ) (English common name : Flaccid leaf Yucca) is a plant of the genus of yucca ( Yucca ) in the family of asparagaceae (Asparagaceae).

description

The slack palm lily grows solitary, stemless or with short stems. The leaves are in contrast to the leaves of the Yucca filamentosa variable, thin, soft, smooth and have fine fibers at the blade edges. They are green to blue-green and 20 to 70 cm long and 1 to 3 cm wide.

The branched inflorescence that begins in the leaves becomes 2 to 4 meters high. The pendulous, bell-shaped, white to cream-colored flowers are 3 to 6 cm in length and 3 to 6 cm in diameter.

The flowering period extends from June to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60.

Occurrence and systematics

The slack palm lily is closely related to the filamentous palm lily ( Yucca filamentosa ), but can be clearly distinguished by its thin, soft leaves. It grows in mountain regions in stony terrain, whereas the filamentous palm lily is located in coastal regions. This species belongs to the section Chaenocarpa Filamentosae series .

The flaccid palm lily is frost hardy to minus 20 ° C in Central Europe . The garden forms known in the collections are hybrids. Attempts at hand pollination by F. Hochstätter with these hybrids, e.g. B. Yucca elata and Yucca pallida were successful.

The slack palm lily is found in the states of Tennessee , Georgia , Alabama , North Carolina , Washington, DC , Maryland , Pennsylvania , Connecticut and Kentucky in mountainous regions of the Blue Ridge Mountains , Great Smoky Mountains , Appalachians , Pockono Mountains in sparse forests at altitudes between 200 and 950 meters.

The first description by Adrian Hardy Haworth under the name Yucca flaccida was published in 1819. Synonyms are Yucca smalliana Fernald and Yucca filamentosa subsp. smalliana (Fernald) Hochstätter .
