Yuriy Sych ( Ukrainian Юрій Сич, Jurij Sytsch ; born April 20, 1985 in Ivano-Frankivsk , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian jazz musician (piano, synthesizer, composition).

Live and act

Sych began classical piano training at the age of six; He completed his studies in classical music in Ivano-Frankivsk at the age of 18 with distinction. In 2003 he moved to Frankfurt to continue his piano studies with Irina Edelstein at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts .

Together with Tim Roth , Martin Standke and the saxophonist Benjamin Steil, he founded the Contrast Quartet in 2006 , with which he released his debut album in 2009. He now also studied jazz and popular music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim with Joerg Reiter . He played in a duo with Nils Wogram , with the singer Maren Kips and at the German Jazz Festival 2008 with Christof Lauer ; he also belonged to Peter Klohmann's band and can be heard on several of his albums. He also performed with Corinna Danzer . Sych, who lives in Frankfurt am Main, also worked as a theater musician at the theater there.

Prizes and awards

With the Contrast Quartet , Sych received first prize in the Hesse-wide competition Jugend jazzt in 2006 and in 2008 the jazz scholarship of the city of Frankfurt am Main ; In 2014 he also received the working scholarship with his quartet Electrolyte . With the Contrast Trio he was awarded the Hessian Jazz Prize in 2016.
