Z 20 Karl Galster (1939–1956) was a destroyer of the destroyer type 1936 of the German Navy .

The Karl Galster survived the Second World War as the only boat in its class still in existence after the Weser Exercise Company in 1940 . The destroyer ended up in the Soviet Union as spoils of war and was only scrapped after 1960.

history

Z 20 Karl Galster was laid on September 14, 1937 at DeSchiMAG -Werft AG "Weser" in Bremen. The launch took place on June 15, 1938, the destroyer could be put into service on March 21, 1939. The boat was named after Kapitänleutnant Karl Galster , son of Vice Admiral Karl Galster (1851-1931), who died in the First World War on March 25 1916 had sunk with his torpedo boat S 22 after a mine hit in the North Sea.

Association membership

After commissioning, the Karl Galster was assigned to the 4th Destroyer Division. On December 1, 1939, the Karl Galster was transferred to the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla.

Second World War

With the 5th Z division under FKpt. Hans Hartmann was involved with the Karl Galster with the boats Diether von Roeder , Hermann Künne and Hans Lüdemann in the laying of the Westwall mine barriers in the North Sea.

From 28 to 30 September, led Karl Galster along with the destroyers Wilhelm Heidkamp , Bernd von Arnim , Erich Giese , Diether von Roeder , Hermann Künne and Hans Lüdemann trade war in the Skagerrak , with 58 merchant ships searched and nine with a prize crew to Kiel sent were.

From October 17 to 18, 1939, the Karl Galster took part in a mining company of the leader of the torpedo boats (FdT), KAdm. Lütjens , against the mouth of the Humber . post war period

After the surrender , the boat was awarded to the Soviet Union as spoils of war. In the first week of February 1946 it went, together with the destroyer Z 14 Friedrich Ihn , to the handover to Libau , where it was put into service as Protschny ( Прочный ). The boat was not taken out of service until around 1956.
