Zbigniew Sawan , born in Zbigniew Nowakowski (born April 14, 1904 in Woskresenowka , Kursk Oblast , Russia ; † June 4, 1984 in Warsaw ) was a Polish stage and film actor as well as a stage director and theater manager.

Life

Born in today's Ukraine, Zbigniew Nowakowski began his artistic career between 1923 and 1926 as a listener at the Warsaw Conservatory . From 1926 to 1939 he worked under the stage name Sawan on numerous Polish theaters such as Cracow , Kielce and Bydgoszcz . In the years 1931 to 1939, when he was mostly in Warsaw, Sawan also learned to direct at the Państwowy Instytut Sztuki Teatralnej . From 1927, during the silent film era, there were also appearances in front of the camera.

When German troops marched into Poland in September 1939, Sawan's film and theater career suddenly ended, and he had to make ends meet with small appearances and as a waiter in a Warsaw artist café. As a result of the murder (March 1941) of the actor Igo Sym , who collaborated with the German authorities , Zbigniew Sawan was arrested by German authorities as part of a retaliatory measure and, together with various Polish actors, temporarily imprisoned in the notorious Pawiak prison. He was even held in Auschwitz concentration camp for eight months .

It was only after his homeland was liberated in 1944/45 that Sawan was able to continue his acting career on a regular basis. He played in theaters in cities such as Szczecin and Gliwice, but also in Białystok and Krakow, and directed the operetta in Warsaw from 1954 to 1957. Between 1959 and 1970 he appeared on several stages as a theater director. In addition, Zbigniew Sawan worked again in films until immediately before his death.
