Signals - A Space Adventure is a science fiction film that DEFA produced together with the Polish film company Przedsiebiorstwo Realizacji Filmów Zespoły Filmowe Warszawa, directed by Gottfried Kolditz . The film officially premiered on December 17, 1970 (preview at the Kosmos cinema in Berlin on December 6, 1970). His literary model is the novel Asteroidenjäger by Carlos Rasch , on which the two scriptwriters were only vaguely oriented.

action

In the 21st century: The research spaceship Ikaros , which was supposed to search for intelligent life in foreign solar systems, was destroyed by meteorites in our solar system, near Jupiter, and any search for survivors was unsuccessful. Commander Veikko would like to try again with his ship Laika, but has to "camouflage" his rescue operation as maintenance work on unmanned space stations. With a motley team, he succeeds in finding survivors of the Ikaros who stayed in a still functional part of the rubble for many months.

Reviews

"An Eastern European science fiction film that pays a lot of attention to trick shots and camera work, but suffers from significant dramaturgical weaknesses."

"Kind of 2001 with no scientific or philosophical alibi, no credibility."

“Visually, the film is limited to bringing the astronaut environment into the picture as attractively as possible. The viewer can admire the comfortable interiors of their vehicles and complicated switchboards, he sees cosmonauts standing upside down and rotating weightlessly in space ... In contrast, the few sequences that play on earth are very unimaginative ... they repeat, oh-too-beautiful pictures of riders on the beach, teasingly in sand and waves frolicking bikini mermaids and children playing in the dunes with flying saucers ... The film does not give any details about the social order in 2020, but everything suggests that the earth's inhabitants live together in peaceful harmony ... The Babelsberg cosmonaut story is emerging from many SF films of western provenance that they show a perspective in which humans, as responsible beings, retain their place and are not displaced by computers or threatened by creatures from other planets.
