history

By resolution of the Bremen citizenship , a new hospital was built because the hospital built on Grossenstrasse in 1823 was no longer able to cope with major epidemics (1827 intermittent fever , 1834 cholera ).

The planning for the first building was carried out by construction director Alexander Schröder , who in March 1849 visited hospitals in Germany, France, Austria and Switzerland with the doctor Daniel Eduard Meyer. The foundation stone was laid on July 24, 1849, and the first patients moved in on August 7, 1851. The name St. Jürgen Hospital was derived from the medieval St. Jürgen inn . The street in front of the hospital was initially called Krankenstraße , but was renamed St. Jürgen-Straße in 1865 . The main building was initially called the “Great Hospital”, then the “Old Inner Clinic” and later also the old ENT and is a listed building. Today it houses a cafeteria and an integrated education center.

In 1855 Carl Anton Eduard Lorent (1809–1885) became medical director and in 1864 head of the hospital. From 1868 to 1896, Jean Paul Friedrich Scholz was the clinic director .

With the increase in the population in Bremen, the city hospital continued to grow in the following years. In 1870 a hospital barracks, a pathology with a chapel and a climatic spa for TB patients were added. In the course of time, other buildings were built, for example for rash diseases and obstetrics (up to 270 beds), a segregation house (smallpox house) with 29 beds as well as a residence for the directors, a wash house and stables.

In 1889/1890 a three-storey, clinkered main building was built for the surgery. This building was expanded in 1907/1908. It was placed under monument protection and now houses an eye clinic and urology.

The insane asylum with 62 beds was relocated to the countryside in Ellen (today's Bremen-Ost Clinic ) in 1904 . A women's clinic and an eye clinic were set up in the existing buildings. 1927–1929 the medical hospital was established , later called the "New Inner Clinic". This building is also a listed building.

In 1920 Otto Hess was appointed director of the Bremen hospital, who held this position until 1938. In 1928 the pediatrician Rudolf Hess received the position of a senior doctor in the children's department at the hospital. In 1934, Hess was fired on racial grounds.

From 1945 to 1955 Rudolf Hess was again head of the children's clinic, which in 1966 was named the Hess Children's Clinic in his honor .

In the 1980s, the clinic hit the headlines as a black money clinic . Administrative director Aribert Galla and a few helpers had made money from numerous businesses. In view of the size of 1,500 beds and an annual turnover of 200 million marks, this behavior had not been noticed for years. In addition, bribes had been paid by companies and overpriced purchases had been made. The damage, which had criminal consequences, amounted to several hundred thousand marks for individual persons.

Around 20 years later, scandals came to the public again: In connection with the formation of a clinic holding company “Gesundheit Nord”, damage of several million euros was incurred. Two clinics' managing directors were convicted.

A new children's clinic was built on Friedrich-Karl Strasse between 2000 and 2003. In 2007, the municipality of Bremen initially released the southern part of 6 hectares of the 19 hectare clinic site for other uses.

In autumn 2011 it became known that bacteria of the genus Klebsiella with antibiotic- resistant properties ( ESBL ) in the neonatology department of the clinic endangered the health of premature babies. Three infants had died of an unknown cause, and ten more had become ill. A crisis team from the Robert Koch Institute then examined the ward, and the clinic imposed a freeze on admission to the affected neonatal intensive care unit. The Bremen Public Prosecutor's Office started the investigation. After the station was completely renovated and converted, it was closed again on February 29, 2012. The managing director of the clinic and the hygiene officer were released from their duties. Just a few weeks after the reopening, several infants in the neonatal intensive care unit were infected with the same multi-resistant pathogens and two more infants died of infections.

Todays situation

There is an institute for Chinese medicine on the premises of the clinic , where patients have been treated by a German-Chinese team of doctors according to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) since 1999 .

In 2010 a certification process was completed in accordance with the Cooperation for Transparency and Quality in Health Care (KTQ). In April of the same year, a partially new building began on the clinic premises, initially with the hospital pharmacy.

An extensive new construction project is intended to replace numerous temporary buildings and shorten the distances between the various departments. The completion of the new clinic building should be completed in 2015. The total costs were estimated at around 230 million euros. The financing is partly provided by the sale of land. The size of the original hospital area between Am Schwarzen Meer, St.-Jürgen-Straße, Bismarckstraße and Friedrich-Karl-Straße will be reduced from 19.4 hectares to around 5.5 hectares.
