Zeytinköy is a village in the Selçuk district of the Turkish province of Izmir . Zeytinköy is located about 89 km south of the provincial capital İzmir , 14 km northwest of Selçuk and 23 km north of Kuşadası . According to the last census, Zeytinköy had 901 inhabitants (as of December 2009). Zeytinköy is about 3 km from the Aegean Sea .

history

After the population exchange between Greece and Turkey , Zeytinköy was founded in 1924 by Turks from Thessaloniki . Zeytinköy ( Turkish for olive village ) got its name from the numerous olive trees . Between 1940 and 1950 people immigrated mainly from the provinces of Denizli , Erzincan , Isparta , Erzurum , Sivas and Trabzon . The population consists mainly of Turks and Zaza , but there are also some Kurds .

Economy and Infrastructure

The main sources of income are agriculture , cultivation of cotton and olives. Many people left the village due to lack of jobs and settled in Selçuk or Kuşadası. There they mostly work in tourism .
