Zhang Daxun
Zhang Daxun (chin .: 張 達 尋, * 1981 ) is a Chinese double bass player.
Zhang comes from a family of musicians from Harbin . He began playing the double bass at the age of nine and studied at the Central Music Conservatory in Beijing from the age of eleven . He continued his education at the Interlochen Arts Academy and at the Indiana University School of Music with Lawrence Hurst . He has taught at Northwestern University and is Assistant Professor of Double Bass at the University of Texas at Austin .
In 2001, Zhang was the youngest ever winner of the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition . He also received the Grand Prize of the American String Teachers Association National Solo Competition . In 2003 he received the Women's Auxiliary of the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra (WAMSO) first prize , which included a performance with the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra under Osmo Vanska .
As a soloist he has appeared with the Orange County's Pacific Symphony , the Monroe Symphony Orchestra , the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra , the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle and the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra and gave concerts at the La Jolla Music Society's Summerfest , the Linton Chamber Music Series in Cincinnati, the Strings in the Mountains Music Festival and the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival . In 2006 he played Bizet's Carmenfantasie at Lincoln Center with the Orchestra of St. Luke's under the direction of Keith Lockhart .
In 2007 he received the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant as the second double bass player in the history of the award . In the summer of that year he performed Schubert's trout quintet with cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han at the Music @ Menlo festival in California . In the 2007-08 season he appeared again at Lincoln Center, in 2008 at the Music @ Menlo Festival and with the chamber ensemble DITTO at the Seoul Arts Center in Korea.
Zhang is also a member of Yo-Yo Mas Silk Road Ensemble . As a member of the ensemble, he has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Carnegie Hall , Japan and China, among others , and has contributed to their albums Beyond the Horizon and New Impossibilities . With the pipa player Yang Wei and the pianist Tomoko Kashiwagi , he founded the chamber ensemble Qi Lin .
